The HVAC installation and startup checklist
Install day is where the sale either becomes a referral or a callback. A startup checklist protects the three things that matter: the equipment (commissioned to spec), the warranty (documented readings), and the homeowner relationship (a professional handoff).
Before the truck rolls
- Verify the pullsheet against the signed proposal: model numbers, matched coil, accessories
- Confirm permits are in hand where required
- Stage materials: line set, pad, disconnect, breakers, thermostat
- Confirm crew, arrival window, and homeowner notification
Setting the equipment
- Protect floors and the work area
- Recover refrigerant and remove old equipment properly
- Set and level the condenser; mount the coil and air handler or furnace
- Braze with nitrogen flowing; pressure-test and pull vacuum to target microns
- Photograph the vacuum reading before opening the service valves
Commissioning
- Weigh in or verify refrigerant charge; record superheat and subcooling
- Measure static pressure and confirm airflow settings
- Record voltage and amp draws for all motors
- Verify thermostat programming and staging
- Run full cycles in every mode and confirm temperature split
Handoff
- Walk the homeowner through the thermostat and filter access
- Register the equipment for warranty and record serial numbers
- Photograph the finished installation
- Collect the signature and the balance, or send the invoice on the spot
- Leave the site cleaner than you found it
