The HVAC job-site safety checklist
Safety checklists earn their keep on the ordinary days: the attic in July, the crawlspace with the questionable wiring, the ladder that has been fine a hundred times. Writing the checks down and requiring them is how a company makes safe the default instead of the exception.
Before starting work
- Assess the work area: attic heat, crawlspace access, trip hazards
- Verify electrical disconnects are open and locked out before touching equipment
- Test circuits dead with a meter, not with faith
- Position ladders on stable footing at the correct angle
- Put on required PPE for the task: eye protection, gloves, respirator where needed
During the work
- Handle refrigerant with gloves and eye protection; never braze a charged line
- Flow nitrogen when brazing and keep a fire extinguisher within reach
- Watch attic footing: walk joists, never drywall
- Take heat breaks and hydrate on extreme days
- Keep the homeowner and pets clear of the work area
Combustion and air quality
- Test for gas leaks after any gas-line work
- Verify flue integrity before leaving any combustion appliance
- Measure ambient CO after furnace work
- Confirm proper combustion air supply
Before leaving
- Re-energize and verify normal operation
- Remove tools, fasteners, and debris from the work area
- Confirm panels are secured and guards reinstalled
- Note any hazards observed for the record, even ones outside the scope
